Damn. You’d think as much funding as this school receives from Frost Enterprises, they’d teach us some new things. Right now Ms. Ferguson is standing in front of the class, talking about how the X-Factor gene in the brain affects outward appearance. Such as Clarice herself and her violet skin and hair, or Polaris with her emerald mane. I don’t need to be hearing this. I know my shit, ok? Actually, not all the classes are this useless. But, I have to pay attention, if my madre and padre found out that I’d been slacking off in my classes, well... let’s just say they wouldn’t be happy. I look at the clock. Hmmm, only a few more minutes till we’re released for lunch.
Ethan Summers leans over and asks, “Hey, Miguel? Can I borrow a piece of paper?” He’s writing notes to Chad. They’ve been real close since Chad came to the school. I prefer to keep to myself, but I’m friends with pretty much everyone. Lawson and I aren’t all that close. And Pandora’s cool with everyone. She’s... peppy. She’s our little group’s cheerleader, if someone’s sad, she won’t rest until everything is perfecto. Well, hell, while I’m at it, I might as well give my opinion of everyone. Shannon Crakowski. The boy is one of the most relaxed people I’ve ever met. That’s why his power seems so oddly paired with him. He has the power to make people feel sick, like nauseous and stuff. That’s why he’s called Plague. But the boy is deeply oblivious, he tells me how Pandora is the woman of his dreams and all, and everyone can see that Terra yearns to be with him.
Terra’s fun to talk to. She has a cute yet sarcastic feel to her, and she’s tough. Cam is pretty cool. I’m not sure what to think about the new girl, yet. I’ve only talked to her once or twice, and she seemed nice. But I can’t judge so quick.
Ms. Ferguson puts her books away, and then dismisses us for lunch, which we make ourselves in the kitchen. I think that’s pretty neat. I nuke a few pieces of pizza, and walk out to the courtyard where most of the other students eat. Lawson and Pandora set on the far side of the clearing on one of the many stone benches, Cam and Angel, who adopted the codename Souldagger(Why? I don’t know.), set off to the side, and Shannon and Terra directly in front of me. Chad and Ethan must be in front of the television. I sit down next to Terra, who’s eating Cheez Pringles and a ham sandwich. Shannon has some leftover spaghetti. Across from us, Pandora stands up and gets some make-up out of her purse.
Shannon nudges Terra slightly in the side and says, “Look guys, there she is.”
A regretful look spreads across her face as she mumbles, “Yep.”
Sometimes, when I look at someone like Shannon, I think people are really ignorant. He is head over heels in love with that girl, and personally, as nice as she is, I think she would turn him down if he ever got up enough courage to ask her out. Which isn’t likely. Pandora’s the one thing that makes him nervous. But then I see people like Terra, who is, um, hopelessly devoted to him, but he doesn’t notice. And I guess it’s the same situation, but I just feel like telling him off sometimes. I think what he has is actually just infatuation, but she really is in love, I suppose.
Angel laughs loudly at something Cam says. “So what about those two?” I ask, motioning with my hand, as to change the subject.
“She likes him,” Terra says, smiling mischievously.
“How you know, chica?” I ask.
“She told me so.”
“And I think he likes her, I saw him staring at her in algebra,” Shannon states proudly.
“I wonder what that name Souldagger means.”
“I don’t know, she must just think it sounds cool,” I say.
“Hey look, there’s your dad, Terra,” Shannon says, pointing off to the side.
“Oh, yeah! Hi dad!” she calls, waving. He smiles back meekly and barely waves. Terra frowns, “That’s odd. He looks sad or something.”
Mr. Thomas walks to Pandora and says something into her ear. All the students are looking now, each with their own interpretation of what the teacher could want with her. She nods her head and then says something to Lawson as she squeezes her arm. Then she stands up, and follows Mr. Thomas back to the main building.
“He usually always waits until lunch is over if he needs to talk to one of us?” Terra says absently. She stands. “I’m gonna go and see what’s up. I’ll see you guys in biology.”
