Gifts of the Future, Prologue

by Linkun

My name is Theresa Cassidy, and right now I stand in front of the observational glass that partitions the Biosphere from it’s Control Room. Mostly, my attention is going to the computers lined against the wall, so that I can take note of my pupils progress during their workout. Twenty years ago, if someone had told me I’d be following in my father’s footsteps, I would have laughed. Long and hard. But here I am. The year is 2018, I’m one of the headmistresses of the Massachusetts Academy of Higher Learning, along with Everett Thomas, and Clarice Ferguson. Yes, Clarice Ferguson. It was common knowledge that she’d died, saving the first class at the academy from the threat of the Phalanx, but she wasn’t dead. She’d simply destroyed her physical body, leaving her soul floating around in a comatose state for five years in another dimension, before finally awakening. Blink discovered a way to contact a mutant witch on Earth, a recent ally of the X-Men nicknamed, Nightbreed. With help, she recreated Clarice’s body, and transported her psyche into it, at which she hastily reintroduced herself to Generation X.

Everett is a different story, during his stay at the school, he’d had all intentions of becoming a full fledged X-Man, which he did. But he also fell in love with Jubilation Lee, and married her. They had one daughter, Terra, and then, in her prime with the X-Men... Jubilee died violently, while on a mission with Wolverine. Terra was four at that time, and that was ten years ago. Since then, she’s grown into a beautiful and charismatic young woman, as well at a student at the school. But, after his wife’s untimely death, Synch decided to leave the group, and ended up becoming the headmaster of the new class, the new Generation X.

I had stayed with X-Force for a long time, debating over whether I loved Warpath or Deadpool. I ultimately decided romance was overrated. But after the sudden death of my father, I was asked to take over as headmistress at this school until Ms. Frost or Xavier could find someone else who could do it. Teaching here also served as something to keep me busy while I figured out what to do with my life. However, the students grew on me, and I ended up staying.

Almost all the students were children of the original X-Men, seeing as alot of them became involved with other people during a relatively dormant time in anti-mutant hysteria, and evil mutant terrorism. But, as with many things in the X-Men history, it didn’t last, and the offspring were sent to the school for tutelage of their astonishing abilities.

However, everyone had to admit their surprise at how much things had changed in the last twenty years. Emma retired as headmistress, leading a wonderfully relaxing life throughout the islands of Hawaii, living off her still growing fortune, compliments of Frost Enterprises, which she also supports the school with. As said, Banshee, my father, is dead, he’d been killed while trying to stop an attack from Omega Red late one night. Monet St. Croix, the real one, not Nicole and Claudette, is leading the X-Men, which consists of Shadowcat, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Skin, Torres, Cannonball, Marrow, Shifter, Maggot, Aura and Rogue.

Most of X-Force had gone their own ways, and those who didn’t joined with X-Factor to form the X-Tremes. Gambit, Colossus, Joseph and Beast disappeared mysteriously while going undercover to try to learn more about a new threat from Sinister. Scott and Jean decided to try to lead a relatively normal life, often helping the X-teams when they needed it, much like Betsy and Warren. And everyone else was pretty much on their own.

Unfortunately, Husk and Chamber had passed on not long after discovering the secret of Penance. Emplate had attacked the group, and in an attempt to frighten the team, he grabbed Paige while a newfound ally of his froze the rest of the team in place. They were forced to watch him drain all of her power, and when she could take no more, he ruthlessly snapped her neck. Jonothan broke free, and ran to his love, cradling her in his arms. And then, without uttering a single word, he let loose with all his psionic energy, destroying his body entirely, as well as that of Emplate and his new comrade. Not a piece of evidence of them remained, except for a raging fire. It was a true miracle Generation X survived that, due to Everett’s aura that was in synch with Penance’s diamond-hard skin.

Speaking of Penance... Emplate died without changing her back into Nicole and Claudette, dooming them to live forever in their silent prison. She still remains here at the school, keeping to herself, usually. They/she has a room, but it’s speculated that she never even bothered looking at it. Most of the time, she is to be found in the still remaining treehouse in the Biosphere.

Basically, that’s all that has happened in the past twenty years. But I should stop reminiscing, I need to pay attention the classes training session.
